3 Strategies for Dealing with Uncharted Territory

Beware of the Fog Bank!

When your job is no longer certain or fulfilling and you know you are going to move onto something else but you are not sure what, you launch yourself into uncharted territory because you leave the familiar behind.  There is a certain fuzziness about describing just where exactly you want to go or what you want to do.  The fuzziness becomes the obstacle because without clarity about what’s next, you stumble around in the fog and can go in circles for a long time without making what looks like progress.  You try to see into the fog but all you can see are these elusive shadows moving and shifting and creating optical delusions!

It is very difficult to enlist support from your friends and professional acquaintances when you can’t see where you are going and can’t be specific about what help you want from them or what opportunity you want them to be on the lookout for.

Start out by moving the stake inch by inch

You can only put a stake in the ground as far as your vision will go and that isn’t very far in the fog!  It doesn’t make any sense to look beyond the fog because you won’t be able to see anything.  In times like these, put your stake in the ground where you can see it. Step over to it, try out that place, and then move the stake a little further away.  And soon you find yourself coming to the edge of the fog bank and it begins to dissipate and you can make out bigger territory further away that are out there to explore.

Create the context of exploring

In creating the context of exploring, you give yourself a certain freedom to step from the fog into uncharted waters.  Even though you don’t know where you will end up, you can declare what you want to explore next.  The stake you put in the ground is not the permanent marker; it is just a temporary landing place.  You can at least be clear about wanting to visit and explore there until the next place to put the stake becomes clear.

As your vision gets clearer and you can see further, you can be more precise and descriptive about what you need to speed up your journey.  Now you can see that you would like to explore over there and you need someone who can open the door for you.  Or perhaps you need some advice about whether to go in this direction or that and you need to talk with someone who has already gone down that path.

Grab the Life Ring that Clarity Offers

Navigating the territory with clarity is like having a good guide.  When you can articulate your needs and wants clearly, you can marshall the energy of many people to be your ears and ears on the ground . The benefits are:

  • You can grab the attention of anyone that might be able to help you get to your next job.
  • You stand out from the crowd as you exhibit intentionality and purpose.
  • You make it easy for people to say YES to your requests because the requests are clear and defined.
  • You draw the resources you need to you through the law of attraction.
  • Clarity gets you into action because you are no longer in a swirl.
  • You are more confident and certain of your direction and you become an unstoppable force.

Gaining clarity is a process.

You don’t have to have the answer when you leave the shore.  You just have to have the ability to not be able to see where you are going but have a good strategy or two for navigating through the fog.

What are you doing to move through your fog bank?
