Gratitude is a gracious acknowledgement of all that sustains us.

Gratitude is the confidence in life itself.

Gratitude is the unshakable belief that “all is well”.

Gratitude does not envy or compare.

Gratitude grows and it does, it gives rise to joy.”

“At times our own light goes out and is rekindled by a spark from another person. Each of us has cause to think with deep gratitude of those who have lighted the flame within us.” – Albert Schweitzer

Evidence suggests that people who are more grateful have higher levels of well-being. Grateful people are happier, less depressed, less stressed, and more satisfied with their relationships. Grateful people also have higher levels of control of their environments, personal growth, purpose in life, and self acceptance. Grateful people have more positive ways of coping with the difficulties they experience in life. Grateful people sleep better.

What can you do today to express gratitude?

Be grateful for what you already have in your life now!

In a bound notebook, write down 5 things for which you are grateful.

Go for a walk or a bicycle ride and be in awe of the simple things you notice.

Write about someone for whom you grateful

Send a message to someone expressing thanks.

Do these things everyday until Thanksgiving!

Share some of your own ideas here about what you can do to express gratitude today!

Thanksgiving is an opportunity to express gratitude to those around you -why not every day of the year?

Thank you for sharing your spark and lighting the flame within others!

And a related question we will answer here about the interview PROCESS: who is interviewing whom?

You are there to find out what they need. And when you find out what they need you can share with them what you have that will help them address that need and get the results they are looking for.

The key to finding out what they need is to ask questions.

In order to ask good questions you need to get a little insight into the context of the job, get a general understanding of some of the needs they may have and results they want to get – the homework you have probably already done to customize the resume you used to get the interview!

If you do days and days of preparation, and learn all about the company and about the industry and all about the issues they are facing – when you are in the interview you may be compelled to tell them how much you have learned, what you think they could be doing, and generally set yourself up for being judged and assessed for everything you say. Your time will be better spent on reviewing their materials and jotting down a few questions to ask them if you were talking to them as a consultant.

Keep the focus on the employer, listen to what their concerns are, ask questions from the perspective of the experience you have had in similar situations, and keep your consultant hat on asking “how can we work together to achieve the results you want?”

If you are stuck in your job process and not getting the interviews you want, or getting the results from the interviews, join my Career Strategy Group which meets every Tuesday morning at 9 am. Click here for more details.

Be curious. Ask great questions!

Going for an interview or exploring some potential employers?

Ask open ended questions of people you meet who work there –What do you like best about working there? What is the prevailing management style? What is the average age (or most prevalent) age of employees? How long have people on staff been on the job?

How often does the leadership meet face to face with the employees? What is important to the organization? What kinds of goals do people have? Are there incentives offered for performance? Is information shared in all directions? Is there a focus on the mission of the organization? What would you change if you could?

Do more asking than telling in the interview.

Organizations will also put as much weight on the questions you ask in the interview as the answers you give. You want to know that the job and the organization is as good a fit for you as you are for them!

Asking questions gives you an opportunity to show the depth of your listening skills and the ability you have to synthesize the responses you get in the content of the homework you have done about the organization.

And more importantly, asking questions also builds trust because you present yourself as someone who doesn’t have all the answers, who is willing to explore someone else’s ideas and it allows you to step into the other’s world and to get a sense of what they are about.

Share Your Best Questions!

What questions have you asked that have opened up conversations or revealed some very interesting information? Share those here in the comments section below!

Becoming valued, indispensable, the “go-to” person, the source, the sought after team member – is a great foundation on which to build your career and your business! Here are 5 tips on how to have people want you!

1. Be interested in others. Find out what is important to them, what they most want, what matters to them, and what really gets their juices flowing!

2. Listen for those needs out there that are a match for what you are passionate about. Step up and say I would love to be involved in that, contribute to that this way. Don’t hesitate. Don’t be shy. Just step up and offer your valuable gift!

3. Ask what else we can do in this arena. Where else is there a need. Offer ideas, content, resources. There is more where that comes from!

4. Create value for everyone in everything you do is what differentiates you as the expert, the source, and the one to go to when someone needs something. Ask yourself in every interaction, how can I contribute here? How can I add value for this person?

Wow, what a great reputation to have!

“Men often become what they believe themselves to be. If I believe I cannot do something, it makes me incapable of doing it. But when I believe I can, then I acquire the ability to do it even if I didn’t have it in the beginning.”
Mahatma Gandhi

Make it up and make it juicy!

You’ve heard the story of that unknown little fish market where the employees laughingly declared they want to be “world famous” and so they started stamping it on the boxes of fish they shipped out! You’ve heard the story because that little fish market became the “World Famous” Pike Place Fish market with a book and a movie and a seminar examining how they became “world famous” and how they delivered an experience so unique that if you are anywhere near Seattle Washington, you will stop there to experience it!

And they didn’t know how they were going to become “world famous”, they just started making it up and playing with it. It wasn’t any great secret that they discovered – they just made it up and then figured out how to “be” that every day in every way, in spite of the upsets and failures they might have as they moved ahead one step at a time towards being “world famous”!

That’s what your picture of success can do for you – your vision, your picture pulls you forward even when the little voice in your head shouts very loudly “Just WHO do you think YOU are?”

How do you create YOUR vision?

Create a vivid picture in your mind’s eye that puts you in the picture, right in the middle of what you want to create with your career or your business, or whatever it is that you choose to do for “work” – and the time and energy you expend in adding value in the world.

Make the picture “juicy” – so that you can feel the joy and excitement and satisfaction when you can see yourself and others impacted by your vision. Add details that you can see and hear and feel and smell so that this vision becomes part of you!

Come up with a short but powerful phase or sentence that captures the essence of the vision and is memorable, so that it rolls off your tongue without your even thinking twice about it!

Take into consideration what matters most to you, your values, your drivers, and all of the experiences that you consider your “peak” experiences.

And be specific – place yourself center stage in this vision because you are the star- the one that will make it happen!

Write it down, say it out loud, and share it with as many people as you can! This is the secret to creating the reality of your vision!

Be inspired by THESE visions:

“Google provides access to the world’s information in one click.” - Google Founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page

“We enter into a covenant that we shall build a society in which all South Africans, both black and white, will be able to walk tall, without fear in their hearts, assured of their inalienable right to human dignity – a rainbow nation at peace with itself and the world.” - Nelson Mandela, Inaugural Address, [May 9, 1994]

“A personal computer in every home.” - Bill Gates [1975]

“First, I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the earth.” - John F. Kennedy [May 25, 1961]

Share Your Most Inspiring and Juicy Visions

Play with the words, make it up. It is all yours. And then do the work to put it into action and be consistent in your focus in every communication and interaction you have with others.

To help others get their juices flowing, post a few phrases here that inspire you that could be part of your vision or someone else’s vision. By the way, it is OK to borrow from others as long as it really reflects your authentic self. You will make it your own in your unique way!

Life happens and the dreams you had as a teenager or young adult get back-burnered for the demands of “real life”- marriage, kids, job, and the hard work of making it! Is it now time to dust off that old dream and see whether it still gets your juices flowing!

1. Put aside the question of how you are going to make it happen. It is in looking at this questions that all of the voices in your head and around you say it can’t be done, it will never happen, Why bother?

2. Put yourself in the picture. What is it like to be engaged in this activity? Interacting with the people you interact with? Getting the recognition for your expertise or talents in this area? Or seeing the impact that you are having on other people?

3. Explore and experiment. Fulfilling on a dream starts with exploring and experimenting with how you might fit into this picture. Do you know any who is engaged in this activity? Is there a school or association where you could learn more about the environment in which this activity takes place. Who are the key players in this area and have they written anything that you could read?

4. Connect with the stakeholders. Who benefits from your fulfilling this dream? What words of encouragement or commitment of support can they give you? Listen to how they see you being able to succeed at this dream. When they can be your champion in being successful believe them!

What dreams will you pursue today?

In the world of work (as well as in other areas in your life) you create your future in what you think and say right now! So, instead of saying what you DON’T want where you work, say what you DO want!

Instead of worrying about how long it is taking, talk about accelerating your relationship building activities, uncovering more project possibilities and getting the perfect spot on the perfect team!

Instead of dwelling on how hard finding the right fit is, declare that wherever you are is a great opportunity for exploring and relationship building! And then experience what you say become reality!

To paraphrase Henry Ford: “Whether you say you can or you say you can’t, you’re right!”
